"Tall, rangy, smart, safety/corner with ability to play all over the backend and at the los but unlikely to ever be a bully in the run game or a force in the box"
Strengths:
A tall, rangy, smart, safety/corner with ability to play all over the backend and at the los. Good man and zone coverage ability and can run with any WR, RB or TE.
Flips hips and changes direction well for a high cut guy. Gets to a to b in a blink. Dangerous blitzer with awareness and finishing ability. Generally reliable open field tackler. Jumps out the building. Playmaker with solid ball skills and ball awareness.
Weaknesses:
Linear guy that lacks some lateral ability. Finesse and doesn't really want any smoke upfront. Much better in space than in traffic. Gets blocked and prefers to avoid rather than take on.
Overall:
Simmons is really a 6'4 230 CB with the athleticism, size and awareness to play S and LB. He could legitimately play CB as a pro if he choose to. To that, he's a lot like a heavier Antonio Cromartie. He's a chase and drag down tackler that's best in pursuit and on the move.
His length, anticipation and versatility make him a hunter seeker as a blitzer. But as a LB, especially up in the box, he plays it like a CB. He's easily pushed around gets lost in traffic.
As he anticipates better with experience he ought to be a Malcolm Jenkins, Deion Jones, Derwin James calibre defender but he's unlikely to ever be a bully in the run game or a force in the box.
